Alginate is known polymer that is extracted from the cell walls of brown algae and it is a biopolymer. Its three subcomponents are mannuronic acids and guluronic acids; when mixed with water, it has the consistency of gelatin. The biodegradation of alginate is due to its non toxicity, biocompatibility and ability to form hydrogels and hence it applied in various fields for example in the food industry, in pharmaceuticals and in biomedical engineering. In the biomedical field, it has wide use especially for wound healing, drug delivery and implantation of tissue engineering scaffold.

Allergic conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, a thin membrane that covers the eye’s white part and the inner eyelid as a result of an allergic reaction. This is a commonly known eye condition that results when the eyes come into contact with allergens like pollen, dust, mites or even animal skin. The condition can be seasonal or perennial and its management includes; antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, corticosteroids among others.
